Common Pain Questions
Pain can be frustrating, confusing and even scary, especially when it affects your daily life. At Twin County Regional Healthcare, we know patients often have questions about what causes their pain, how it can be treated and when to see a specialist. This page answers some of the most common questions we hear in our clinics.
What causes pain?
Pain is your body’s way of signaling that something may be wrong. It can come from:
- Health conditions (such as arthritis, fibromyalgia or neuropathy)
- Inflammation or infection
- Injuries (like sprains, broken bones or pulled muscles)
- Nerve damage
- Surgery or other medical procedures
Pain can also be affected by stress, anxiety or past trauma. We look at all the factors that may be contributing to your pain, not just the physical symptoms.
What’s the difference between acute and chronic pain?
- Acute pain happens suddenly and usually goes away as your body heals. It might last a few days or weeks.
- Chronic pain lasts more than three months and may continue even after the original cause is gone.
Knowing the type of pain you have can help us create the right care plan.
Do I need to live with pain, or can it be treated?
You don’t have to live in pain. There are many ways to reduce or manage pain, including:
- Counseling
- Injections or nerve blocks
- Lifestyle changes like exercise or stress reduction
- Medications (including non-opioid options)
- Minimally invasive procedures
We will talk with you about all your options and work with you to find what works best for your body and your life.
Are opioids the only option for pain relief?
No. In fact, we focus on non-opioid and safer alternatives whenever possible. These may include:
- Anti-inflammatory medications
- Electrical stimulation therapy
- Muscle relaxants
- Steroid injections
If opioids are needed, we use them carefully and for the shortest amount of time needed. Your safety is our priority.
When should I see a pain management specialist?
You may benefit from seeing a pain specialist if:
- Pain is affecting your daily activities or mental health
- You’ve tried other treatments that haven’t worked
- Your pain lasts more than three months
- Your current medication isn’t working or causes side effects
- You want more options beyond medication
A specialist can help identify the source of your pain and offer advanced treatments that may not be available through a primary care provider.
What happens during a pain management appointment?
Your first visit may include:
- A review of your medical history and current symptoms
- A physical exam
- Imaging or diagnostic tests (if needed)
- A discussion of your goals and concerns
- A personalized treatment plan
You’ll have time to ask questions and leave with a better understanding of what to expect next.
Will I need surgery?
Not necessarily. Many types of pain can be treated without surgery using injections and other non-invasive methods. If surgery becomes the best option, we’ll discuss surgical treatment plans, connect you with the right specialists and support you through every step.
