Frequently Asked Questions

What causes pain?

Pain is your body’s way of signaling that something may be wrong. It can come from:

  • Health conditions (such as arthritis, fibromyalgia or neuropathy)
  • Inflammation or infection
  • Injuries (like sprains, broken bones or pulled muscles)
  • Nerve damage
  • Surgery or other medical procedures

Pain can also be affected by stress, anxiety or past trauma. We look at all the factors that may be contributing to your pain, not just the physical symptoms.

When should I see a pain management specialist?

You may benefit from seeing a pain specialist if:

  • Pain is affecting your daily activities or mental health
  • You’ve tried other treatments that haven’t worked
  • Your pain lasts more than three months
  • Your current medication isn’t working or causes side effects
  • You want more options beyond medication

A specialist can help identify the source of your pain and offer advanced treatments that may not be available through a primary care provider.

What happens during a pain management appointment?

Your first visit may include:

  • A review of your medical history and current symptoms
  • A physical exam
  • Imaging or diagnostic tests (if needed)
  • A discussion of your goals and concerns
  • A personalized treatment plan

You’ll have time to ask questions and leave with a better understanding of what to expect next.

When opioids are used, we follow strict safety guidelines and work closely with you to monitor and adjust as needed.
