As you may recall, the Health Insurance Marketplace has been offering expanded access to low-cost healthcare coverage for people without health insurance, or for those who are interested in exploring more cost-effective alternatives to their current coverage, since its inception in 2013. They will become part of more than 2.8 million people who are living with a history of breast cancer, whether that means they are currently in treatment or have completed treatment. While breast cancer incidence rates have been declining since the year 2000, those numbers remain too high.

Two years ago, the Health Insurance Marketplaces, a key provision of the Affordable Care Act, opened for the first time. Since then, an estimated 10.2 million Americans have enrolled for healthcare coverage through the online marketplace, which allows people to browse coverage options, compare plans and purchase health insurance that meets their individual needs. Overall, under the Affordable Care Act, 17.6 million more individuals in the U.S., some of whom are right here in the Twin County community, now have improved access to medical care in the form of preventive health screenings, vaccinations, wellness checks and women’s care, among other services.

In recognition of May as National Stroke Awareness Month, Twin County Regional Healthcare is promoting stroke awareness with this year’s focus on women. Over 795,000 individuals experience a stroke each year with about 60% of the deaths occurring in women. Although more women have breast cancer than strokes, more women actually die from strokes than from breast cancer.
