Grayson
County has long been isolated by the surrounding mountain ranges
and the New River. As a result the county is a haven for traditional
art,
music, and lifestyle. For people looking for a quiet vacation, or
a peaceful and safe place to enjoy retirement, Grayson
County may seem like paradise. The west end of the county is a
forested, wild, national recreation area, containing two of Virginia's
highest peaks - Mt. Rogers 5,729 feet and Whitetop Mountain at 5,520
feet. Eastward for more than 40 miles, stretches highland meadows
and valleys, laced with streams and creeks. The New River, one of
the world's oldest and also a National Heritage River, flows throughout
the county. Modest farms and miles of pasture patchwork the scenery
from winding roads. Small localities and little churches enhance a
spirit of community fast disappearing from the modern world. Indeed,
many historical homes and buildings dating back to the 1700s & 1800s
still stand as a testimony to Grayson County's rich history. |
The
Historic
1908 Courthouse served as the Grayson County Courthouse until
1981 when a new courthouse was built. In 1986, the building was donated
to the People of Grayson County and a non-profit foundation was established
to oversee the building. Today, the Historic 1908 Courthouse serves
as the Art & Cultural Center of Grayson County and houses the Grayson
County Tourist Information Center, the Vault Museum, The Treasury
(fine art & craft gallery), the Baldwin Auditorium (seats 210), the
Courthouse Foundation, a small conference room (seats 25) and 3 private
office rentals. |
Grayson Highlands State Park is
located near Virginia's highest point of 5,000 feet. This is a fabulous park for sight seeing. For those with horses, special campsites are set aside
along with stables for the animals. This park hosts the Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival annually and Fall Festival. Wild ponies graze in the mountain
meadows and annually there is a pony round up and auction. Many people refer to this park as Virginia's most beautiful. The park is adjacent to the Mount
Rogers National Recreation Area that is part of Jefferson National Forest. The park offers a visitor center, picnicking, hiking trails, horse trails, mountain
bike trails, full hookup campsites, hunting, concession, interpretive programs and shelters. This park is excellent for cross-country skiing and winter camping.

The Grayson County Recreation Park is
located on the northeast side of Independence. The park has a nice swimming pool, two baseball diamonds and a picnic area with shelters.
Don't miss the falls of Peach Bottom Creek just east of the park. The falls are on private property but they can be viewed from the road.
